Genzano di Lucania (Potenza) 26.01.1933 – Cremona 15.05.2010. At the age of five he began to study music with his uncle Lombardi. He attended intermediate and junior secondary-school at a Jesuit boarding school in Potenza, where he was “put on trial” for his paranormal faculties. In Potenza he gave piano and organ concerts and completed his secondary education, specialising in classical studies. A free-thinker, he established ties with Carlo Levi, Rocco Scotellaro, Vito Riviello, Orazio Gavioli, Lucio Tufano and with the latter he created an important and innovative meeting-point for political debate, gathering together the best Lucanian intellects of the day.
For the first free elections he painted huge murales in Potenza’s Piazza Sedile, and wrote essays on illiteracy in Lucania jointly with Carlo Levi. First attempts to create a “new” theatre with Orazio Gavioli.
First exhibition of figurative art, held at the Lucanian capital’s classical lyceum.
He co-authored a book on the new aesthetics (1950) with Vito Riviello.
He made his first trip to Paris to meet Sartre and the latter’s 1950s intellectual entourage.
On another trip to Paris (1964) he became acquainted with Borges, who dedicated a poem to him.
In 1959 paint the altar-piece for his family chapel.
Leaving his old friends behind, at the age of 19 he began his long journey northwards: he went to work in Cremona, where he made friends with Crippa, Fontana, Buzzati, Vittorini, Roversi... In reaction against certain fads and fashions in the art world, he dedicated his professional work chiefly to architecture, design, advertising and scenography.
His work in the 1960s included a commision for the interior design of “I Due Foscari” in Busseto, and the complete interior of the Vittoria motion-picture theatre in Crema. Some design projects of hs, such as Villa Kesten in Geneva, are considered ante-litteram |
